Quit Smoking Savings Calculator

Enter what you smoked and what a pack costs where you buy it. This works out the money you save by not smoking — per day, week, month, year and five years — and the cigarettes you did not smoke. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Saved in a year
$3,650

at 20 cigarettes a day and $10.00 a pack

What you smoked on an ordinary day, not your heaviest one.

Set this to what you actually pay. Prices vary by country, state and brand, so the $10 default is a starting point rather than an average.

Change it for 10-packs, 25-packs, cartons or a pouch of rolling tobacco — enter what the pack holds and what it costs.

Add it and the page also totals what you have saved so far. Leave it empty and the figures below are projections.

What not smoking is worth

Time Money saved Cigarettes not smoked
A day $10.00 20
A week $70.00 140
A month $304.17 608
A year $3,650 7,300
Five years $18,250 36,500

How this is worked out: price per pack divided by cigarettes per pack gives a price per cigarette, multiplied by cigarettes a day and by the days in each window. A month is a twelfth of a 365-day year, so it comes out at 30.4 days rather than 30 or 31. Only the cigarettes are counted — not lighters, not insurance, not medical costs. Those are real, but putting an invented figure on them would make the total less trustworthy, not more.

Why This Matters

Money is rarely why anyone quits, but it is the reason that survives a bad week. Sleep and breathing are hard to hold in your hand. A figure that grows every day you do nothing at all is not, and it keeps growing while you are asleep, at work, or thinking about something else entirely.

The arithmetic is deliberately plain: your price per cigarette, times the cigarettes you are not smoking, times the days. Every input is yours and every output is your own number carried forward. There is no national average buried in it, because cigarette prices vary so much between countries, states and brands that an average would be wrong for most people reading this — and a number you cannot check against your own receipts is a number you will not believe.

The five-year row is the one worth sitting with. A pack a day is a rounding error on any single afternoon and a five-figure sum across five years, which is the whole problem with daily costs: they are too small to notice and too large to ignore once you total them.

Next: the smoke-free days counter keeps the days themselves, the quit smoking timeline shows what the body does over the same period, and the nicotine clearance calculator covers the first three days in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do you save by quitting smoking?
It is your pack price times the packs you no longer buy. At a pack a day and $10 a pack that is $10 a day, $70 a week, about $304 a month, $3,650 a year and $18,250 over five years. Change the price to what you actually pay and the calculator redoes all five numbers, because pack prices differ enormously between countries, states and brands.
What price per pack should I enter?
The price you actually pay at the shop you actually use. This page deliberately does not quote an average: cigarette prices vary by country, by state or province, by tax band and by brand, so any single "average" figure would be wrong for most of the people reading it. The default of $10 is a starting point to be overwritten, not a claim.
What if I do not buy cigarettes by the pack?
Set the cigarettes-per-pack field to whatever your pack, pouch or carton actually holds and enter what that costs. The calculator works out a price per cigarette from those two numbers, so rolling tobacco, 10-packs, 25-packs and cartons all come out right.
How do you count the cigarettes I have not smoked?
Cigarettes a day multiplied by days. If you enter a quit date, the days are counted from that date to today; if you leave it empty, the figures are projections for a day, a week, a month, a year and five years from now.
Does the calculator include the other costs of smoking?
No. It counts the price of the cigarettes and nothing else, because that is the one number you can check against your own receipts. Lighters, higher insurance premiums and medical costs are real, but putting a made-up figure on them would make the total less trustworthy, not more.
Is anything I type here sent anywhere?
No. The whole calculator runs in your browser. There is no signup, no account and no server call — close the tab and nothing about you is left behind.
