Where the sources disagree

Carbon monoxide is the one figure the three bodies do not state the same way. The WHO puts the return to normal at 12 hours. The NHS says it has halved by 8 hours and reached a non-smoker’s level by 48. Both are on the timeline above, on their own rows, with their own names against them.

The cough-and-breathing window differs too: the WHO gives 1 to 9 months, the NHS 3 to 9 months. Averaging those into a single figure would produce a number neither body publishes, so the range is shown as each gives it.

What this timeline does not say

  • It does not say your lungs return to a never-smoker state. None of the three sources says that, and how much recovers depends on how long and how heavily you smoked.
  • It does not put an exact percentage where a source says “about half”, and it does not turn a range into a date.
  • These are population findings. They describe what tends to happen, not what will happen to you.

The versions of this list circulating online have been copied so many times that the figures drift: hours become minutes, "about half" becomes an exact percentage, and windows that the health bodies give as ranges harden into single numbers.

Three published timelines are used, and where they differ the difference is printed. Carbon monoxide is the clearest example — the WHO puts the return to normal at 12 hours, the NHS says halved by 8 hours and at a non-smoker's level by 48. Both are here. Neither has been averaged into a figure that no health body actually publishes.

What the timeline cannot tell you is your own case. These are population findings, and how much of the long-run risk comes back down depends on how long and how heavily you smoked and on what else is going on with your health. Where the sources hedge — "about half", "up to 10%", a range rather than a date — the hedge is kept.
